We will investigate the developmental and evolutionary origins of vocal/auditory communication in animals with the goal of identifying possible precursors of human speech and music. We will draw from the literature of neurobiology, behavior, cognitive neuroscience, and evolutionary biiology, as well as the literature of speech and music. The course will comprise of lectures and demonstrations. A paper based on a topic of interest or a project will be the basis of the final grade.
